after 10 months of relative silence, we're ready release. proud present emulationstation 2.0, release candidate 1!

don't know, emulationstation front-end popular raspberry pi retro gaming distribution retropie. runs on windows , flavors of linux.

"we" because project no longer myself. nils bonenberger joined project in december, , has been assisting ui design, graphics, , testing. results speak themselves:

new features:

• built-in, graphical scraper system. no more using external python script.
  • automatically download full names, box art, descriptions, release dates, , optionally ratings.
  • can scrape several systems @ once, or individual games.
• built-in, graphical metadata editor. no more editing xml files hand.
  • press "select" button in game list , choose "edit game's metadata" open it.
  • can scrape metadata editor, too.
• old theming system has been replaced. new system more flexible, still simple, , more consistent.
  • there's <include> tag now! no more defining fonts/sounds hand across 30 systems!
  • textlists support left, center, , right alignments, horizontal margins. can control line spacing.
  • images can in svg format (vector graphics), @ resolution.
  • can add static text wherever want.
  • themes distributed sets. can change current set within emulationstation itself, without restarting program.
  • read themes.md examples , more information!
• new "system select" screen, featuring logos systems in carousel. themable, of course.
• new set of themes done nils, every platform retropie supports , more! each system has beautiful vector logo!
• old menu (when press "start") has been redone, in both functionality , style. along pretty every piece of ui.
• input configuration system has been revamped. in addition looking nicer, easy add new controllers after initial configuration: select "configure input" main menu.
• on-screen system, shows buttons things.
• built-in settings menu lets change:
  • screensaver timeout
  • screensaver behavior (dim vs. black screen)
  • toggle framerate display
  • toggle on-screen display
  • toggle left/right changing system in game list view (forcing use new system select carousel); useful analog sticks.
  • screen transition style ("fade" or "slide")
  • current theme set
  • global system volume (on operating system level)
• when scrolling in long game lists, after few seconds, screen dim , display first 2 letters of cursor is, steam big picture style.
• gamelist.xmls support relative paths, should possible transfer them between computers , make portable installations.
• emulationstation no longer closes if launch without es_systems.cfg set properly. shows in-program message box explaining error.
• upgraded sdl1.2 sdl2 raspberry pi video driver. no more "white dot" when es starting.
• es_systems.cfg in xml, consistent every other configuration file.

how it:

easiest way started install new retropie image, created release! if don't want use retropie, there instructions compiling on fresh raspbian install.

if want try out on desktop before setting pi, there windows installer , 64-bit debian package install pre-compiled binaries , default set of themes available on website! you'll have configure es yourself, though.

expect bugs! literally 2 people, single person doing programming , single person doing qa. when happen, post them github (but make sure you're not making duplicate issue! check closed issues too!).

note: "version 2.0" code in "unstable" branch of git repository. once things working fine, merged master branch.
