How to Begin 3D Landscape Measure/Mapping Project
i new arduino, seems place imagination. parents own farm large yard many buildings, trees, fences, ditches/waterways. have experience google sketchup 8 , want create model encompassing terrain , buildings in yard. yard 400ft 800 feet. accuracy important , inch or two.
i have few different ideas , can't find seems ment besides extremly expensive 3d laser scanners engineering purpose. simple 3d scanners using 2 cameras not have range "point map" created seems right direction project. ??is there simple way import 1 of these point maps google sketchup free version??
first idea: altimeter watch , laser tape measure. upon reading numerous reviews handheld altimeters not show small changes in altitude. need accuracy inch , these accurate +/- 10ft. laser tape measures on ebay can give me referance measurements can track location between buildings , can set grid , if ardiuno altimeters accurate enough can enter data hand , plot points. may able transit level need 2 people. ?? how accurate barometric altimiters?? accuretly move few inches , able record readings??
i know there gps sheilds arduino accurate few meters... me translates +/- 10ft. have no experience gps maybe here does. if take gps reading +/- 10ft accuracy saying within 10ft of exact lattitude , longitude on earth. ??my exacty lat. , long. isn't important me if move gps 2ft. going able measure that?? gps sheilds have allitude information??
final idea: there way create data loging system employs simple staff walk through yard in streight lines , every 6 inches 2 feet , log locaton , altiude. thought setting square perimiter blasing sonar waves out , stick sends out wave. different sonars triangulate staffs 3d position. walk every place set staff logs data should graph 3d accurate model. way arduino?
also thought of setting laser tape measure on spinning rod make circle of height measurement single altitude. raise rod 1 foot, spin 360 while recording distance create graphable rise/run 3d model. there sensor measure 50 ft cheap laster tapes on ebay?? know easy enough spin sensor need powerful enough sound sensor interfaces arduino.

this not field , may correct me, can see no way inch resolution in altitude, maybe using staff adjustable retro reflector wouldn't automatically reading unless use encoder on reflector or something, detect laser pulse , transmit current reflector height arduino.
i think bridge far interested in answer if it's not.
edit: leave reflector in 1 position on pole , scan both h , v dimensions, when find use distance , angle calc need. think complex idea, not trig involved mechanical aspects of scanning laser real accuracy , pulsing laser measure distance. arduino cannot itself.
