Upload different patterns to Arduino Code from simple application

okay don't have best/simple way word trying 1 of reasons google searches have been futile.

so give little context, trying build controller chain of 50 rgb leds each controlled ws2801 chip (this string). using arduino duemilanove (w/ atmega168) , can incorporate sd card if necessary.

now want make easy upload different patterns arduino. in end, want make simple app can upload different patterns arduino, , question comes in. wondering if feasible create system blinkm's sequencer. able create application non-technical person can create patterns , upload them arduino.

i thinking arduino program's function read patterns memory (onboard if possible sd card if necessary) , if starts receiving commands on serial port store incoming pattern.

i have searched around doing similar haven't found example start basing project off of. great if point me towards has done similar or has written idea.

i have looked @ new blinkytape software application creates file uploaded in normal arduino programming. have looked through blinkm's software firmware custom , not written arduino.

you enable verbose mode compile , link/upload steps see commands ide generates compile, link, , upload code. then, application execute same commands.

there tons of examples around of reading data serial port. of course, need define format of data, build application send data in format, , program arduino read, parse, , store data based on format.
