GLCD via 12c


i have been trying nick gammon's glcd via 12c project going without success.

i know there have been other threads dealing issue cannot find them
this display using

and know because have used glcd 3 library no problems bill perry. have rechecked wiring , seems backlight working , can adjust contrast pot , see individual pixels. code upload there nothing showing on display. used 12c scanner at

"i2c scanner
scanning...
no i2c devices found"

i using 12c connection method mcp23017 chip , glcd display (type b) has same connections 1 used in nick's project. can offer suggestions might doing wrong. have attached photo of setup don't know if help

i don't see pull-up resistors on 2 i2c lines (sda , scl).  if using internal ones may not sufficient.
