Hall Effect Help - linear position meter
hello all...
goal: measure linear position on 5 inches within 1/4 inch accuracy @ top of range, in wet environment (hydraulic jack plate on outboard boat).
readout/display: string of leds (from bottom top of range).
thinking of using these hall effect switches adafruit - us5881lua. switches close lights led in relative range. bottom , mid range not critical accuracy, 1/2 inch increments or fine. top important, 1/4 inch or less.
anybody seen type of "meter" around? i've never used hall switches, don't have feeling how sensitive magnetic proximity is. thoughts appreciated.

nobody has thoughts or experience hall effect devices?
