Board to board communication

hello all,
in project i'm using 2 boards interface display, encoder , opto - sensor. through display on 1 board i'd change values of variables on second. best way this?. through rx/tx or through wire transmission ?.
currently  encoder board has values of x , y 20 , 24. user feeds data through button/display interface on 1st board, boards pings encoder board(2nd board) change these values 22 , 25.
best way ?

avrdude: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x0000 0x0c != 0x62
