Music Instrument Shield

hi all, i'm new in here , have problems music instrument shield. actually, questions not problems. work @ project , have give explanation how works. mention use shield arduino uno board. now, questions:
1. sound comes from? generates it?
2. how volume set?
3. how "instruments" changed?
4. give me list instruments music instrument shield can reproduce? found not correct. 1 example piano, list doesn't sais so.

could please explain better trying achieve?

i no expert, list have there seems me like  midi drum sounds list.
if so, if trying create midi "instrument", sound no produced arduino (or shield) itself. arduino send computer (or syntethiser,...) message carrying couple of different values:
- kind of command is, note on or note off;
- note, instance c3 or f7;
- velocity, note piano or forte

this message read computer (or syntethiser) , translated sound.
in case of list have there, translated drums sounds.
but translated piano, saxophone, or virtually other instrument...

what has integrated vs1053 capable of doing "translating" thing told before , produce sounds.
