A designer's responsibility in copyright issues?

i posted in dreamweaver forum, probaly fits better in here. had client wanted me use line drawings gave
me website. drawings provided scans, , when enlarged,
it obvious drawings scanned book or magazine.
claimed did not know origin of scans. told
copyrighted material, , can in big trouble using them.
said, "i rather beg forgiveness, ask permission". our
business relationship ended 5 seconds later. question this: if
had not noticed drawings copyrighted , put them on site?
anyone know designer's liability in such situation?

why post in many forums?

others have suggested putting clause contract
client requiring client warrant he/she owns rights
all material provided , indemnifying you/holding harmless
against adverse consequences. depending on live, may
provide protection.

however, **am** lawyer (albeit not in area of law), , if
you have done nothing wrong, end spending lot of money
defending lawsuit. being vigilant still idea.
:-) may learn in other ways client shaky on
ethical/legal issues. ;-)
