Trouble Connecting to Web Server with WifiShield Example

hi all,
i'm having trouble connecting wifishield web server using arduino examples "wifiwebserver" , "simplewebserverwifi".

i have mega 2560 wifi shield.

i can connect router (netgear n600, security , remote management disabled) -- serial monitor indicates connection , led on wifi shield indicates link.
i can ping shield windows 7 computer fine mininal latency.

however, when attempt open ip address in browser, browser cannot connect web server.  have tried in both chrome , internet explorer no luck.
i know router isn't problem, because setup iis on laptop on wireless network , can connect web server (port 80) fine.

the serial output simplewebserverwifi example is:

attempting connect network named: erichome
ssid: erichome
ip address: 192.168.1.2
signal strength (rssi):-30 dbm
to see page in action, open browser http://192.168.1.2

however, attempting connect address fails.  again, can ping address fine.  don't 404 error -- "can't connect".
any tips?  code unmodified simplewebserverwifi example (except changing ssid , password appropriately).

which wifi shield? there appear several different types available.

avrdude: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x0000 0x0c != 0x62
