Under-lit translucent dance floor w/o shadows
i know mildly off topic, love raw brain power around arduino forum, input appreciated!
i planning on making huge 8'x8' wide , 1' tall platform oh, around 625 individually addressable leds (in 25x25 grid) underneath. each led coupled, , understand overkill, ir transmitter / detector detect accuracy people standing , @ distance platform.
i've been doing chunk of research, , think have of electronics side licked (thanks due! 1 million adc samples second! woowee!), general flow i'm planning going ir > holy mux town! > arduino > raspberry pi > arduino > leds. said, of have figured out, although examples of people multifudging 625 phototransistors helpful (i should take clue can't find examples ^_^).
the part i'm out of element on, , hope y'all have insight on, structure itself. i'm picky aesthetics, , love made of frosted acrylic , lit bottom. i've seen examples of webcam / projector approach, doesn't accomplish look/reactivity want. so, being said, know need support underneath 8'x8' (will 4 - 4'x4' sheets) sheet of acrylic, supports see cast shadows leds, , above surface won't it's evenly lit. i've seen few examples of doing this, , few i've seen typically accomplish segmenting platform grid, making kinda pixelated thing isn't want.
so, ask collective genius of forum if y'all have ideas of supporting (btw, how support need? can't find equations on that) platform without casting shadows. i've thought maybe acrylic rods, refract, although maybe enough diffusion, it's non-issue. also, how thick need be? i'm guessing 1/2" should enough supports, understand thickness , amount of supports inversely correlated. anywho, i'm having hard time thinking how approach problem.
well guys, y'all, post forums feel have looked everywhere.

just lay out fill lucite?....clear, hardening resin? can install floor covering on that.
it won't portable, , weigh ton....but solve shadow & support issues.
you could, suppose, use similar method produce 4 x 4 (or 8 x 8, whatever) "tiles" plug eachother. keep more portable and, @ least" moveable 1 location another...? air gap, or diffusion layer between "light bricks" , visible floor covering, pixel or tile looking effects should minimalized.
good luck!
