Thread: Want to use router's DNS server for local hostnames
can't ping hostnames or linux box
i'm configuring small office lan , 1 of machines on network running linux (ubuntu other distros) while others running windows xp. have run issue linux machine can't resolve hostnames of other (windows) machines on network , vice versa. interestingly, windows machines able resolve each other's names using 'ping' command can't see linux box. of machines able resolve domains outside of network (e.g. ubuntuforums.org).
have tried both assigning static ip's machines , having them assigned automatically via router's (a linksys wrt54g) dhcp server. limited networking knowledge, suspect has more dns server using in setup. using opendns dns servers realized servers have no idea how resolve local hostname. set dns server router address doesn't seem resolve local hostnames resolve outside network.
know can associate hostname ip address manually editing hosts file, seems tedious , wasn't dns invented solve problem? i'm wondering why windows machines can resolve each other's names linux machine can't. windows machines using different protocol? i've read netbios , wonder if windows machines using protocol find each other. windows 'ping' command double duty, using both netbios , dns? it's worth, 'nslookup' fails miserably on windows machines when trying resolve hostname linux machine gives further evidence other protocol being used.
ideally, i'd router act dns server , handle caching of hostname/ip pairs if that's possible. router (linksys wrt54g) can do?
i think getting confused between local area network (lan) , wide area network (wan). protocols quite different. long router acting dhcp server pc's incl. linux machine getting ip-address router , automatically within 1 common subnet, example 192.168.1.x each machine has different number x , router comes 192.168.1.1 - @ least that's how wrt54g acts.
communicate between various pc's need sure have same domain or workgroup setting. microsoft quite confusing naming calling "workgroup". can change calling "homenet". make sure pc's set (and need restart each machine after change).
running ubuntu 9.04 on 1 machine , correctly showing pc's in "homenet".
starting web-browser on machine sending wan- message router acts dns-server , forwards requests isp's server.
can check on windows pc going terminal mode (start/execute/cmd , enter "ipconfig /all". settings listed there.
1 more word of caution: unless have marked partitions or folders shared can not see/access on neighbour's pc.
hope not confusing!
cheers
