Arduino output to open transistor, not getting enough current.
i attempting use arduino output pin open transistor connected 1 of these: http://www.robotroom.com/launch-controller/estes-model-rocket-igniter-before-and-after-launching.png
it electric match launching model rockets. requirement igniting these should 1 amp 50 milliseconds.
i have npn transistor arduino output connected transistors base. unregulated battery(4xaa) voltage connected transistors collector. emitter connected electric match witch in turn connected ground.
now problem: transistor turning on , allowing current flow collector emitter, won't provide enough current ignite match.
if replace match led led turn on.
i have used multiple transistors collector current 5 amps.
so how arduino activate transistor allow enough current flow ignite match?
the transistor light match if remove arduino , connect battery voltage transistor base instead. when connect match ignite slower if connect directly battery. transistors react faster others?

hello,
look @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/transistor#transistor_as_a_switch. there see basic connections. emitter of npn transistor connected gnd , collector 1 pin of load. other pin of load connected plus of supply voltage. drive transistor arduino connect base arduino output on resistor (!!!). voltage between base , gnd around 0.7v when transistor open. arduino gives max. 20ma. can calculate value of resistor.
about transistor type:
look @ current amplification factor (beta) of transistor. ratio of max. collector current , base current. when need 1a collector current , have 20ma base current beta must 50 minimum. take transistor has beta of @ least 100. on power transistors beta smaller on small signal transistors. datasheet of transistor tells how long can operate @ 1a.
best regards
