Thread: Updating programs to newer versions
i've been using ubuntu on , off few years now. theres annoys me , i've been meaning ask why ubuntu, linux in general guess, this.
in default ubuntu 9.04 installation, firefox 3.0.x installed, not 3.5. thats fine. if want upgrade 3.5, have add ppa lines, isn't of hassle. once installed, called shiretoko. understand codename 3.5 build. question is, why can't update 3.5 when comes out having jump through hoops work around? in windows , mac (i understand linux isn't either), download , install. simple, no hassle. don't have think it.
example vlc. version in repo's 0.9.9a. want 1.0.0. how install it. have add ppa lines , import key. key doesn't work (i blamed on vlc, not ubuntu). still, why doesn't update manager see have later version , update?
hear time how cool linux because can update programs 1 place, whats point if can't newer version without type of work around? i'm not looking bash linux, ubuntu, or anything. i'm wondering why have system of updating programs...
in 9.10 firefox 3.5.2 shireiko 9.04 can have both for
while. 2 different icons. keep same settings. 2 price of one.
intents , purposes both firefox 1 upgraded. not
know why must have been reason imagine.
